Giclee

“Art is either plagiarism or revolution.”
Paul Gauguin French Post-Impressionist Painter, 1848-1903

What is Giclee?
Giclee is fine art reproduction using a printing process very similar to modern ink-jet printers. The term derives from the French verb ‘gicler’, which means ‘to squirt’. It has become a very popular method of creating limited edition fine art reproductions.

Ms. Mauro employs Qoro®, LLC a company which produces museum quality giclee that are
faithful to the original painting using state-of-the-art nano-pigment inks. Qoro has done reproductions for the Barnes Foundation and the Wyeths, among others.

Veronica Mauro’s work is reproduced in very limited quantities, preserving the value of each piece for its owner. Each giclee is “lightfast”, water and moisture resistant, and guaranteed to retain color and integrity for a lifetime. All Qorographs are created on archival canvas.
And each giclee is numbered and signed.

Around the Bend

20 x 16 $200

25 x 20 $225

This painting captures a common and yet classic scene from that ancient jewel on the Adriatic.

Every visitor to Venice knows the allure of traveling on the canal and coming upon scenes of unexpected beauty and mystery.

I have worked to capture the lushness of life on those canals and especially the now and again sight of some distant gem glowing in the midday sun.

In this painting light bathes exotic architecture in a spectrum of color and reflects on the water, combining to form an esthetic and enticing visual.

Bear Skull & Gumball Machine

18 x 24

$200

This painting appealed to me because of the soft glowing quality of the light shimmering off the opaque skull, reflective metal and porcelain.

Interpreting this effect meant learning a nuance, that of creating soft luminous light. Until this point, I had been more at ease with dramatic effects. There was also the test of forming the colors for several items of a similar hue.

Painting the color pieces without allowing them to repeat or over-power and controlling the light was in the end very satisfying.

Fruits below Table

18 x 24

$200

I should have called this “Fruits About to fall off Table”. I love the perspective of viewing items from above and then distorting them to create an off balance effect, a la Cézanne.

My enjoyment does not imply ease. I found balancing light and dark areas difficult at times. Another challenge was creating dark yet airy spaces in the background. Borrowing a page from Renoir, I solved the problem by using light touches of blue in the very darkest spots.

Masquerade, Pretty Faces on Parade

15 x 30

$250

I find Venetian masks irresistible for their artistry, mystery and legend. These particular masks inspired me to paint them as living subjects, each with a unique personality. Only the center mask looks directly at you, while the left one hides behind “her feathers” and the right mask seems dreamily unfocused.

Creating an aesthetic quality on canvas without being decorative was a test. Painting the light reflected in feathers and finding pieces of color in each mass was complex. Using a palette knife to achieve all this kept me diligent.

This painting was always challenging to paint, at times maddening, yet so rewarding. There were times it seemed something took over and guided my hand.

Matisse, the Compote & Me

11 x 14

$150

This still life appealed to me for two reasons: the Matisse poster in the background and the colorful graphic scarves used throughout.

I have always admired Matisse for his bold yet cunning use of contrasting graphic designs, stripes, cross-hatches, paisleys and others which he worked into his paintings masterfully.

My challenge was to paint these delightful elements as part of the overall design and not the focus on the objects alone. To do this I put aside Matisse’s style, allowing the details to recede so that the lights and color-shapes could stand out.

Reflections on Venetian Village,
Naples, FL

24 x 18

$200

Although named for another sea-edged Italian city, Naples, FL is home to a charming village built in the Venetian style on the bay.

I loved the variety in form and color each building gives to the whole and the way the water mirrored all this during a windy spell in the Gulf of Mexico.

My mission was capturing both the vibrant color-shapes and the rippling reflections of the village in my painting. I used the moorings and jetties to help divide and anchor my canvas.

Remains of the Day

24 x 18 $300

26 x 35 $700 Framed

My husband and I celebrated his 40th birthday with a dinner including a magnum of Silver Oak bought at auction. I chronicled the event with a painting of “the remains of the day”.

Combining the diverse textures of wine bottles, metals and soft cloth was intriguing. I particularly enjoyed creating the lush and vibrant highlights of warm and cool colors bouncing off the glass, the copper chair and the linen.

The total effect is of a soft glowing throughout the painting.

oil painting

Rue Mont Carmel, Quebec

20 x 24

$250

Quebec City is a captivating antique fairyland with wonder and beauty around every corner. This painting is a memory of the city and my portrayal of its wonders.

The Château Frontenac, a turreted fortress a la the Magic Kingdom dominates the local streets and waterfront. I chose a side view of the hotel, down a street with many other delights. I was enchanted with the colors and motifs of each building. My goal was to create an aesthetic design not a literal account of every window box or rain-stained turret.

All art distorts. In this case, I have edited much from view…a tower of the hotel and many, many windows. The effect I think creates harmony and focus

Swirling Bowls & Flowers

16 x 20

$175

The title expresses how it felt to create this piece of art. It was as if all the elements of color, light and lines came together to create an overriding “swirling” movement in my painting.

This is one of my first palette knife paintings, and I found it to be a pleasing and instinctive way to use oils. I love the viscosity of oil paints. Moreover, with the palette knife, I discovered a freedom almost play in mixing and applying the paint.

oil painting

Through the Arch, Venice

18 x 24

$200

Arches intrigue me, as the form lends itself so naturally to the visual artist. I love using their vertical lines and curved head to move the eye around a canvas and frame the painting.

I paint with lots of color – as much as I can see – but this view offered the whole spectrum. Can you imagine a fuchsia building inside that archway against an azure skyscraper with bright golden hanging gardens?
Note the alizarin shapes formed into swirling patterns on the back wall. This wall sunk into a shifting sea surrounding the boats, morphing from cobalt to ultramarine to patina green to deep violet.

View from Balcony, Venice

18 x 24

$200

The play of light on the structures and water, creating so many geometric shapes and patterns of color was an irresistible view from our balcony at the Palaccio Bonvechhiata.

The winter sunlight in Venice can be quite strong. It draped the buildings with intense highlights and lush shadows composed of so many colors. In addition, the water and its reflections were a challenge to plum with my palette knife.

This painting marked a return to palette knife for me, which provided the added joy of creating depth and texture with the oils.
